С.pneumoniae/M.pneumoniae Multiplex

C. pneumoniae is an obligate intracellular parasite. According to statistics, C. pneumoniae is the causative agent in about 5-15% of community-acquired pneumonia cases. The prevalence of infections caused by this infectious agent tends to increase. Laboratory diagnostics using microbiological techniques is complicated. A comparison of the sensitivity of the microscopic method and PCR indicates that the frequency of pathogen detection by microscopic examination is 10-12% and by PCR is at least 98%, respectively. When culture technique requirements are met, the sensitivity for Chlamydophila diagnostics is 60-80%, while PCR shows a sensitivity of at least 95-98%.

M. pneumoniae is a single-celled Gram-negative microorganism without a cell wall. It is regarded as difficult-to-culture microorganisms and is considered superficial parasite of mucosal cells. Clinical, radiological, and laboratory data on infections caused by M. pneumoniae is often inadequate for accurate diagnosis. Therefore, laboratory diagnostics should include direct methods (primarily PCR) for detecting the microorganism in biological material.
