Epstein-Barr virus

Herpesviruses are abundant in nature. Currently, more than 100 herpesviruses have been identified, only a small number of which occur in humans. Herpesvirus can remain persistent in the human body for an entire lifetime, causing diseases with multiple clinical implications.

Humans are the only reservoir of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). At an early age, the infection is accompanied by slight manifestations or is generally asymptomatic. Initial infection during teenage years or at a more advanced age can cause a disease known as infectious mononucleosis. Chronic EBV infection is more common among patients with immunodeficiency. This condition mostly manifests itself in the form of progressive lymphoproliferative disease or CNS lymphoma. The virus can cause malignant transformation of cells, which suggests that it is involved in such diseases as endemic Burkitt lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma in men from some ethnic groups of southern China, as well as Hodgkin lymphoma.
